Incontinence is more common than you think

Bladder leakage is more common that you think, affecting 1 in 2 Australian women over the age of 35. Many women experience what’s known as stress incontinence: a physical stress or pressure on your internal organs as the result of simple daily activities like coughing, sneezing, laughing, bending, lifting or exercising, causing the loss of a few drops when your bladder is full. The other primary form of incontinence is called urge incontinence which is the inability to hold on for more than a few minutes once you have a sudden overwhelming need to urinate, often triggered by running water, or even arriving home and unlocking the door.

Female incontinence is widespread and affects women of all ages and backgrounds. One of the biggest causes of female incontinence are weakened and stretched pelvic floor muscles (sometimes resulting in prolapse) from pregnancy and childbirth. Other causes include the thinning and drying of the skin in the vagina or urethra, especially after menopause, certain medicines, constipation, being over weight, urinary tract infections, vascular disease, and diseases such as diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and multiple sclerosis.

Although it comes with challenges, with the right advice from a continence health professional and products specifically designed to help, incontinence doesn’t need to stop you from living life to the fullest. Poise has a range of discreet and comfortable Liners and Pads that are specifically designed to help you manage light bladder leakage. Poise has also been voted by Australian Consumers as The Most Trusted Incontinence Brand four years in a row, as awarded by Readers Digest.
