Is your skin at risk?

If your skin is often exposed to bodily fluids it is at risk of breaking down.
Incontinence is harsh on the skin because of the ammonia in the urine and the proteins in the feaces (enzymes) that cause the skin pH to increase and become alkaline. The additional moisture from bodily fluids disrupts the normal barrier function of the skin, it then makes it a lot easier for bacteria to enter the skin causing painful inflammation. Damage generally begins with a slight reddening of the skin that may also burn and itch. In some cases, blisters and breakdown of the skin occur causing pain.

Harsh detergents like soap contribute to an increasing pH and this weakens the skin’s natural protective barrier even more.

Dry and flaky skin is more vulnerable and at a higher risk of breaking down, frequent washing with soap and water makes the skin more prone to irritation.

Others at risk include diabetics and people in poor general health, those with a poor nutritional status (underweight, overweight, obese), people needing care and people who are no longer mobile. Taking certain medication can also weaken the skin and increase susceptibility to skin breaking down.

Independence Australia stocks a range of skin products.

Guard your skin with PROSHIELD

After each episode of incontinence, the skin should be cleansed as soon as possible, very gently and without rubbing to remove the source of irritation. Use a mild cleanser with a pH value that is suitable for the skin like Proshield Foam & Spray cleanser, gentle and pH balanced. It is a no-rinse foam suitable for incontinence and total body skin care. The cleanser formulation is ideal to help remove dried feaces and eliminate odour.

Every time you cleanse the skin protection should be applied to moisturise, nourish and create a protective barrier. Proshield plus skin protectant is a moisture barrier, that moisturises, conditions and protects the skin from breaking down due to the harsh conditions of incontinence. It can be easily removed with the Proshield cleanser.

The PROSHIELD skin care range is a simple two step regime to help you keep skin healthy and does not clog incontinence products.
